Chariots Sauna Shoreditch might be on the chopping block if city council has its way. Not because it is a gay sauna, but for gentrification.
Highgate Holdings, one of the largest hotel operators, have secured control of Shoreditch High Street. Smack dab where Chariots Sauna Shoreditch is located. The company has submitted plans for a 300,000 sq ft mixed-use project.
While the deal is yet to be completely finalized, the plans will be submitted to Hackney Council in the next four weeks. Construction would be scheduled to start in late 2016.
Now the ball is in City Councils’ court. What does this mean for Chariots Sauna Shoreditch? They are not talking. But since Highgate Holdings has control of the area, it would seem it’s only a matter of time before they get evicted.
This news comes at a time when Chariots Sauna has had its share of bad press. In February 2015, three men were rushed to hospital following a drugs related incident at their Vauxhall location. Then last week a man was found dead at its Waterloo location. That death has been attributed to a heart attack and is non-suspicious.
If the Shoreditch location does close down, Chariots Sauna will still have locations in Streatham, Vauxhall and Waterloo.
